The Chicago Neighborhood Guidebook Series

Between August 2021 and May 2022, Read & Run Chicago hosted monthly “mini-runs” (defined as half mile up to 2 miles) inspired by The Chicago Neighborhood Guidebook, Belt Publishing anthology edited by Martha Bayne. These events were designed for anyone who wanted less reading or shorter runs, anyone who wanted to try out Read & Run Chicago, or runners who simply wanted get to know new areas of our city through the movement type they love most.

While all the stories in this book are worth reading, we focused on some of the most “runnable” tales (example: they mention several places):

Wicker Park by Kevin Coval
South Loop by Megan Stielstra
Beverly by Scott Smith
Lakeview: On Belmont and Clark by Emily Mack
Hegewisch by Josh Burbridge
Pilsen by Sebastian Hidalgo
Ashburn by Tim Mazurek
Bridgeport by Ed Marszewski
West Ridge by Sara Nasser
Pullman by Claire Tighe

After the series ended, nine of the routes were published on the Chicago Public Library Foundation’s Blog.
