On May 4, 1886, Chicago's Haymarket Square (now the West Loop) was holding a labor demonstration for the 8-hour workday when a bomb exploded, leading to gunfire and chaos, and ultimately the execution of several labor activists. The public's varying attitudes towards the protesting workers exposed anti-labor sentiments across the country and had lasting impacts on worker's rights for decades to come.
Join Read & Run Chicago for the kick-off of our Summer 2025 season and our 4th Anniversary as we welcome author Joseph Rulli for either a 1-mile walk or 3-mile run around the West Loop exploring four of the key locations in this affair and its aftermath.
Following the run, we will hang at Haymarket Pub & Brewery for a conversation with author Joseph Rulli and Liz Garibay, founder of the Beer Culture Center, about the connection between labor movements and the Haymarket Affair and one Chicago's most beloved drinks: beer. One beer included in the cost of the ticket.
