The Palos Trail system is located just Southwest of the city and is Chicago's go-to spot for trail running, mountain biking, and other adventure activities. Many Chicagoans head here without realizing that hidden in these woods was the site of the world’s first nuclear reactor!

We're hosting author Jessica Mlinaric for a choose-your-own-adventure trail run where we’ll guide you to the site of the reactor, featured in her book Secret Chicago: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure. You’ll meet Jessica and learn the history and aftermath of this nuclear reactor while you get a guided run through Red Gate Woods in the Palos Trail System.
