An easy-paced, 3-mile fun run, Chicago bakery history, and cookie decorating–what better way to usher in winter running season? Read & Run Chicago and Bon Vivant Cakes are thrilled to team up for a one-of-a-kind event. Together, we’re bringing Jennifer Billock’s Historic Chicago Bakeries to life in another installment of this series with a twist–crafting your own marvelous creations in a cookie decorating class accessible for all levels!
Our run focuses on the history of historic Lutz Bakery (2458 West Montrose Avenue) on the city’s Northwest side. This European-style konditorei (pastry shop) has been a neighborhood favorite since 1948 and withstood the test of time–and many cultural shifts in a constantly changing city. Allison and Fernanda will guide you here to learn about their history history and taste one of Lutz’s creations.
Runners have the option to add on a Chicago-themed cookie decorating class with Bon Vivant Cakes (4749 N Spaulding Ave). Taught by cookie extraordinaire Amanda, this class will be everything you’ll need to get started (or continue!) your journey with royal icing cookie decorating. You’ll learn about Bon Vivant cookie and royal icing recipes, proper piping bag holds, and various piping techniques to achieve different designs, including borders and flooding, wet-on-wet technique, how to create texture and dimension, and using edible paint. Amanda will break down the decorating process step-by-step, and you’ll leave with five beautifully finished cookies! Included in the cost of the class is Bon Vivant’s signature snack spread, cocktail (or mocktail) and trifle dessert. If you add on a gluten free option, Bon Vivant will make sure to have a gluten free option available for you to enjoy. We only have a limited number of spots for this portion of the event.
